I told myself I would do a weekly update every Sunday. Clearly that didn't happen since I am writing on a Tuesday night. With practice labs and tutorials on Mondays, and having quizzes on Tuesdays, it is definitely hard to find the time on Sundays to sit down and talk about the week when I'm spending my day stressing about a quiz.

Fridays I always do my planner for the week ahead so I know what needs to get done on the weekend. When you have 2 to 3 tutorials/labs a week, weekends are much needed.
This week, no surprise, involved more antibiotics. Believe it or not I have somehow managed to retain a good chunk of all this information (well we'll see when I get my mark back). By the end of the infectious disease module knowing me I'll probably have a favorite antibiotic. I can tell you right now it is not a cephalosporin.
Practice lab was all about yeast infections....so fun. Labs always start with a pre-lab discussion about a patient case. This week was a patient with an infection and prescribed a course of antibiotics. Usually a 30 minute discussion involves reviewing the patient's history, symptoms, medical conditions, medications, and allergies. Understanding the background of the patient is key to making appropriate individualized recommendations. In this case, the patient had reported having two allergic reactions, one to sulfa drugs and another to amoxicillin. However, GI upset was with Clavulin (combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid) but when taken amoxicillin alone did not experience stomach upset. So the patient can tolerate amoxicillin not clavulanic acid. However, it should be noted that the patient does not have a true allergy just an upset which can be resolved with probiotics, increasing fluid intake, or changing the dose. But really depends on the patient, condition/pathogen, and antibiotic.

Well doesn't that chart look lovely.....Bugs and Drugs, the wonderful world of determining which antibiotics are effective towards which classes of microbes. Had to learn this in less than week (lectured on Thursday, quizzed on Tuesday). Also should be noted that this chart is not "black and white". There are many discrepancies since the world antibiotics and resistance is constantly changing. As you can imagine is lots of fun to study the "grey" zone.

Of course my week wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Boulevard coffee Roastery on campus. Even though, I sat in the same spot for 5 hours, it was not nearly enough time to learn as much as I wanted to. At least it is pretty to look at. Going back to using sketchbooks for this term was the best thing I could have done. Way easier for me to organize my thoughts and draw the numerous drug molecules. Here I was studying Fluoroquinolones...which can be used in cases of pneumonia and urinary tract infections.
Had a 3 day weekend so decided to take the train down to Seattle to visit the fam. Seattle never fails to disappoint but Amtrak does. Was scheduled to arrive in Seattle at 10pm.....let's make that 12:30am. Over the entire trip the train stopped 5 times either because the tracks were not lined in the right direction, waiting for another train to pass, losing GPS after crossing the boarder , oh and the best...some idiot decided to out run the level crossing and their car got stuck. This caused a 2 hour delay, waiting for the police to come and clear the train to keep going. You know Amtrak is doing bad when one of the crew members gives everyone snack packs.
The entire weekend was so sunny which made the daytrip to Bainbridge Island all that much better. Kristin and I decided to checkout the Storyville Coffee Company which was not bad, considering I got a London Fog, of course, rather than a coffee. They even sent us home with a free mug.
Seattle is definitely my happy place. I don't care how many times people tell me Vancouver is the place to be...then you haven't really experienced Seattle. Especially on those sunny days where the water is so blue and you can see the mountains in the background. Mt. Rainier made an appearance all weekend as well, which always a plus.

This week I discovered a new podcast, Thick and Thin, which gets into the more "life" topics. In one of her episodes, Katy, mentioned The Enneagram Test. Takes maybe 15 minutes to do with about 125 questions. What I like about this test compared to other tests, is that it will give you a mix of types and won't categorize you into one type, since many people are not just one type. Not surprised I was a mix of a type 1 and type 3, which was interesting to read about. If you have time and are into these types of things, would definitely give it a try.
